Gallagher is pleased to expand its partnership with the University of Maryland Francis King Carey School of Law through the establishment of the Gallagher LLP Fellowship, an endowed fund for students showing a commitment to public interest law.
“We are delighted to support Maryland Carey Law students who aspire to serve in the public interest as lawyers. Maryland Carey Law and the Maryland Public Interest Law Project have been longtime effective leaders in providing opportunities, education, and inspiration for law students and lawyers to work for justice,” said Tom Dame, Managing Partner at Gallagher.
To be eligible for this new fellowship, students must participate in unpaid summer activities through the Maryland Public Interest Law Project such as working for a public interest organization or governmental entity, or participating in unpaid public interest internships, externships, or summer programs, including serving as a law clerk. Preference will be given to students who participate in unpaid public interest work pertaining to immigration issues.
“We deeply appreciate Gallagher’s generous and enduring commitment to Maryland Carey Law, and to our shared commitment to public interest lawyering. Gallagher’s newly established endowment strengthens our efforts to support students who take on transformational, but unpaid, summer positions with public interest employers. These experiences shape student legal careers, and Gallagher’s support ensures that financial barriers do not stand in the way of student aspirations to pursue careers that advance justice, strengthen the rule of law, and serve our community,” said Renée Hutchins Laurent, Dean and Professor of Law at Maryland Carey Law.
The new fellowship builds upon the firm’s longstanding involvement with Maryland Carey Law, including annual support of the Gibson-Banks Center for Race and Law and LEAP Scholars Program. Gallagher partners Steven Metzger and Paul Caiola serve on the law school’s Board of Visitors and Jared Dvornicky until recently served on the Alumni Board.
