Gallagher LLP and The University of Baltimore Foundation have announced the creation of an endowed fund supporting the Fannie Angelos Program for Academic Excellence, which will expand its ability to assist both current and future students as they pursue legal careers.

The Fannie Angelos Program is a unique collaboration between the University of Baltimore School of Law and Maryland’s four Historically Black Colleges and Universities (HBCUs): Bowie State University; Coppin State University; Morgan State University; and the University of Maryland Eastern Shore. This race-neutral, merit-based program represents a forward-thinking approach for finding talented students and empowering them to gain admission to law school, succeed in law school, and thrive in their legal careers.

This new source of support, stemming from the distribution of cy pres funds following a recent court settlement, aligns with Gallagher’s longstanding partnership with the University of Baltimore School of Law. The purpose of this fund will be to provide additional resources for program participants including, but not limited to, stipends for tutoring and similar skills-building activities, coverage of fees related to the LSAT and bar exam, and awards for students pursuing public service summer employment.

“This fund will provide our students with the financial resources to help them realize their enormous potential,” said Michael Meyerson, Director and co-founder of the Fannie Angelos Program.

Added Michael Higginbotham, co-founder of the Fannie Angelos Program, “It is a significant step that will enable students to take a giant leap”.

“We are grateful to Gallagher for their generous support,” said Dean LaVonda Reed. “This endowment strengthens the Fannie Angelos Program’s mission to empower talented students to pursue their professional dreams and ensures that financial barriers do not stand in the way of their success. With these additional resources, our students will have even greater opportunities to excel academically, gain practical skills, and make meaningful contributions to the legal profession.”

“We are grateful to be able to play a role in recommending the Fannie Angelos Program for an award of cy pres funds that will advance the organization’s important mission,” said Paul Caiola, partner at Gallagher.
